Week 4 Blog Task Recording Reality


Coronation Street was first broadcast on Granada on 9th of December 1960. The show was soon syndicated on the ITV franchises. The programme centres on the lives of a group of people who live on a street in the fictional town of Wethersfield, a town based in Salford. The street consists of different terraced houses and businesses including newsagents, a cafĂ©, a corner shop, a textile factory and The Rovers Return Pub. According to the show’s fictional history, the street dates from the early 1900s and was named at the time of the coronation of King Edward VII. Coronation Street is made by Granada Television at the Media City in Trafford Wharf in Great Manchester. The program shows in all ITV regions. Coronation Street has become the world’s longest running television show as of 17th September 2010. Coronation Street broadcasts five episodes a week. Each episode lasts 30 minutes. The scheduling of Coronation Street is designed not to clash with the scheduling of its biggest soap rival. It is typically scheduled so that one episode appears before is shown and another after. This technique draws the viewers who want to watch both programs back to ITV and consequently gives a boost to the ratings of the program that is shown in the prime time slot immediately after Coronation Street. The majority of the people who watch Coronation Street (33%) are over 65 years old because they have being watching the show since when it was first broadcast in 1960. This viewing group also tends to be made up of retired people and therefore have more leisure time to dedicate to regularly following soap opera. This multi-camera shot shows two characters talking to each. The camera is mainly focused on the man’s face as he reacts to what the woman is saying. This 2 multi camera shot shows the two characters talking to each other, sitting down while one is holding a cup of tea and the other character is very upset looking into the distance. The camera is mainly focused on the man listening to the lady. The frame of the shot is the camera over the shoulder and the camera is framed so that we can see the man’s full face and body picking up a mug.





This shot is a tracking shot. The shot is the right shot showing a side view of the man but mainly focusing on the woman.


Coronation Street uses a lot of multi-camera shots when filming each episode. They use one camera to focus on one character and another camera to focus on another.
The difference between Coronation Street and EastEnders is that the  program makers took the decision that the show was to be about "everyday life" in the inner city "today" and regarded it as a "slice of life". Creator/producer Julia Smith declared that "We don't make life, we reflect it". She also said, "We decided to go for a realistic, fairly outspoken type of drama which could encompass stories about homosexuality, rape, unemployment, racial prejudice, etc., in a believable context. Above all, we wanted realism“.
While as in the Coronation Street is created by Tony Warren by Granada Television is a drama serial about the domestic lives of the working class people in the north of England, specifically the resident of the Coronation Street which is set in a fictional town called Weatherfield in Manchester.  Coronation Street brings drama and comedy together for the audience to see.

On Monday 2 November 2014, 8.05 million viewers watched Coronation Street according to Barb and 7.66 million viewers watched EastEnders.
On Tuesday 3rd November 2014, 7.41 million viewers watched Coronation Street.  is 6.72 million viewers watched EastEnders.

On Friday 6th November 2014, 7.34 million viewers watched Coronation Street and 6.27 million viewers watched EastEnders.           

When comparing both shows EastEnders has a larger audience figure because more people are interested in the EastEnders than Coronation Street. Coronation Street has been broadcasting for a longer time than EastEnders and this may be why viewer figures are larger for EastEnders.

There are different types of shows that broadcast on television, Coronation Street is a soap but soaps are not the only types of television shows other examples include sitcoms such as Friends, game shows such as the Weakest Link.

Friend’s is a sitcom American television show produced by Warner Bros Studio in Burbank. The show is a sitcom that was created by David Crane and Marta Kauffman.  It was aired in NBC from September 22, 1994 until May 6, 2004.  Bright/Kauffman/Crane Production produced the television; they were working with a different company called Warner Bros Television. The series aired in May 6, 2004, the television show. The audience figure that watched the friends finale was approximately 52.5 million viewers making it the fourth most watched series finale in television history, as well the most watched episode in the decade.  Friends show had a positive reviews throughout it’s run, the show had become one of the most popular sitcom shows of all time.  Friends won numerous awards during the time that it was aired on television such as 62 Primetime Emmy Awards as well as winning the Outstanding Comedy Series award in 2002. When Friends started on the 8th season the show hit the ranks on the 21 televisions guide 50 greatest television show of all time placing at Number 7 on the Empire Magazines and many more.

Friend’s is one of the most popular sitcom comedy show of decade long-running show. Friends attracted in the United States 52.5 million viewers. In 1996 Friends created a show called “ The Super Bowl” that episode that was broadcast to viewers numbers of over 52.9 million people watching that show across the world.
